Genesis 3 - 1 Caterpillar

Both sides entered the game on the back of indifferent form as fourth entertained top, although this was not noticeable from the undoubted quality and intensity on the pitch. The first half was as even as it was full-blooded and ended in deadlock. The second half saw Genesis step up a gear, with the pace of Ford causing the Caterpillar defence endless problems. Genesis eventually took a deserved lead through a firmly hit Steve Straker goal. Caterpillar levelled against the run of play and the last 20 minutes were something of a frantic affair. Genesis maintained belief and regained their lead through Chris Ford who would later score another to seal the win. It was a sweet victory against an excellent side, particularly for Ian Radcliffe, Ian Cawley, Alex Cuthbert, Iain Robertson, and Chris Ford who were part of the team that suffered the infamous 8 - 0 thrashing against the same opposition. The Caterpillar manager was distruaght at the end, holding his head in his hands in disappointed silence. Despite this, he still found the grace to come into the changing rooms and congratulate Genesis on their win and apologise if his well-intentioned words of encouragement were misconstrued as patronising after the 8 goal thumping 6 months earlier. An easy gesture to make if they'd just won but to do it after a painful defeat was an act of class and humility. It was seriously appreciated by Genesis who true to form remained as dignified in victory as they are in defeat. The Genesis dressing was unanimous in the belief that if the title escapes us then today's opponents would be the preferred victors.
